Top – level domain .onion is reserved for hidden service names. Contrary to widespread misconception, ICANN did not delegate.onion from an open DNS root. The Internet Engineering Design Team (IETF) has determined .onion as a special purpose top-level domain (see RFC 7686) to be used in the implementation of anonymous services with a high level of confidentiality, which is considered a “necessary new functionality” (see RFC 6761).
Can I visit the Dark Web? Is it worth it?
It may happen that you want to use Tor in order to take advantage of some of the products and properties of Dark Web trading platforms. Although the increased level of anonymity on the Dark Web may be useful, this can in no way serve as a justification for conducting illegal activities.
